'Jazz guitar voicings' by Hugh Burns is a music tuition book that provides guitarists with an easy introduction to jazz harmonies. It uses a relatively small number of basic two, three and four note chord shapes that can be utilised at different positions on the guitar fretboard to produce a wide range of chords.
The emphasis of the book is on getting the reader playing as quickly as possible. Only the essential musical theory is presented and the book contains many examples using mixture of chord charts, tabulature and staff notation. Every exercise, over fifty examples in total, is accompanied by an embedded audio track.

The audio demonstration tracks were made specifically for the book and are high quality studio recordings made using a Gretsch Synchromatic archtop guitar, acoustic double bass and a full drum kit. The book starts by looking at scales, chords and the relationship between them, followed by comping, an introduction to the blues form and to the big band style of playing. It refers to the styles of many of the great masters of the jazz guitar, including Freddie Green and Django Reinhardt and looks at techniques to add interest to your playing. It covers riffs, minor chord sequences and Latin styles. Towards the end of the book three complete arrangements with the flavour of well known jazz standards are included to play along with. A glossary of terms and a recommended listening list are included.
